Mathematics majors qualify for top-ranked careers
| Friday, February 03, 2012 |
If you enjoy working with numbers, solving puzzles or finding patterns in the world, and you are looking for a college major that will challenge you on an intellectual level, you may want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.
As a mathematics major you will study calculus, modern algebra and other mathematical branches on your way to learning how this language can be applied to the world around you, according to CollegeBoard.com, a higher education research organization. Majoring in mathematics will require you to attend lecture classes and computer labs and write papers on mathematical concepts.
The study of mathematics can be broken into a number of concentrations including statistics, applied mathematics, computational mathematics, or financial mathematics. Each of these concentrations has its own list of required courses.
According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, math skills figure prominently in the top 15 highest-earning college degrees. CareerCast.com, a job Web site, selected mathematician, actuary and statistician as the second, third and fourth best jobs of 2011, respectively.
Other popular career fields for mathematics majors include education, finance and computer science, according to the Mathematical Association of America. SchoolGuides.com – helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
